Health First scholarship recipient Neshay Mall understands the complexities of living and going to school in a far-off place.
Of Indian descent, she was born and raised in Kuwait. After reading about Northern Arizona University's robust international student scholarship program, she enrolled without ever having stepped foot in northern Arizona.
“I arrived (in Flagstaff) in January, and there was snow on the ground. Coming from the desert to here was a shock.”
Neshay’s undergraduate degree was in accounting. But her volunteerism and work with student groups led her to complete a master’s program in counseling and student affairs. After seven years in Flagstaff, she continues her studies at NAU, pursuing a Ph.D. in Combined Counseling and School Psychology. She said she hopes to work with underserved communities in northern Arizona to help reduce health inequities.
“I want to address the needs of the underrepresented and underserved, empowering them to create awareness and advocate for their mental and physical health,” she said. “Providing psychological services to community members allows me to give back to the very community I live in, to change ideas, notions of stigma and systems, share knowledge, build relationships, spread social awareness, develop empathy, and make a difference in people’s lives.”
As part of her Ph.D. program, Neshay is completing a clinical practicum, counseling international students, faculty, and staff at NAU. She sees the need for mental health support growing.
“International students often have difficulty adjusting to a new country, a new place,” she said. “They experience loneliness, issues with inculturation, and even racism and discrimination. And all of this has been underscored by Covid-19.”

Neshay earned a 2022 Health First Foundation scholarship for mental and behavioral health specialists.
